About

MISSION STATEMENT

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (“VFW”) Mission is to foster camaraderie among Veterans having served or are serving in overseas conflicts; all veterans, active duty members of our military, and the community at large.  The Sullivan Jones VFW supports and sponsors local area veterans, active-duty military members, senior citizens, Scouts of America, local schools, etc. in the greater Poestenkill area.

HISTORY

After V-J Day at the end of World War II, the Government began discharging services members.  A point system was established giving one point for each month of service, one point for each month overseas, and five points for each medal.  While a few whom had been in since late 1940 came home in mid to late summer.  Most of those who were overseas when the war was ended began being discharged October 1945 through February 1946.  Several groups of those who returned home to Poestenkill, New York began to meet and discuss forming a Veteran’s Post, and over time those discussions became a reality.  In collaboration with Veterans from World War I, it was decided to establish a Veteran’s of Foreign Wars on May 29th, 1946.  In naming the Post, there were five men who were killed in World War II, these men were:  Elmer Catlin, Edward Foley, Curtis Jones, David Rivette, and Lawrence Sullivan.  After a lengthy discussion and vote, it was determined that the Post’s name would be Sullivan-Jones, and National Headquarters would assign the number 7466.  The first officers of the Post were:  Commander Clayton Mosher; Senior Vice Commander Cliff Heffner; Junior Vice Commander William Platner; Quartermaster Walter Bubie (also serving as Officer of the Day); Chaplain Victor Heffner; and John Dobransky as Adjutant.
